EXSA LogoSchool and Workshop on
Quantitative methods in XRS

Dear Colleague,

From May 12 to 17th this year, the European X-ray Spectrometry Association (EXSA) together with the physics department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Nova University in Lisbon (FCT UNL), is organizing the second edition of EXSA School and Workshop on Quantitative Methods in X-Ray Spectrometry (www.exsa.hu/quant2019) in Lisbon (Portugal).

EXSA is pleased to announce that two young scientist poster awards will be allocated during the event, thanks to our sponsor Wiley's X-ray spectrometry. Each prize consists of a book voucher and a certificate. One prize will be bestowed at the student (Ph.D.) level and the other one at the Post-Doctoral level (holding the Ph.D. no longer than 3 years). The modalities of participation and distribution will be announced during the event in Lisbon.

The Spring School will be held May 12 to 14th, 2019 and is targeting graduate students, Ph.D. and young Post-Docs. Please note that the number of students is limited and that the place is filling up rather quickly. The Workshop will be run consecutively May 15 to 17th, and will be concluded May 17th with a day dedicated to the meeting of Fundamental Parameters Initiative to which all the attendees are invited to participate.

We are happy to have been able to convince experts in the field of X-ray Spectrometry to give lectures at the Spring School, as well as to invite distinguished scientists to share their research at the Workshop. The two keynote lectures will be given by internationally renowned researchers: Joanna Hoszowska (Fribourg University) and Christopher Chantler (Melbourne University) will open the school and the workshop, respectively.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts and younger scientists from academia and industry and to present and discuss recent advances, research results, and perspectives in different fields of applications including:

  • Quantitative X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES, XAFS, EXAFS)
  • Quantitative GI/GE XRF and TXRF
  • Quantitative high-resolution and micro-XRF (2D and 3D)
  • Quantification with Monte-Carlo methods
  • Quantification with Fundamental Parameter methods
  • Fundamental Parameters - Measurements and Calculations

This EXSA week event aims at providing high-quality training to younger scientists in quantification in X-ray spectrometry and at proposing a forum to interact within the community. The workshop, in particular, will allocate time for in-depth discussions between academic and industrial scientists via its round-table for instance and will offer an excellent platform for networking and knowledge exchange.
Indeed, besides scientific presentations, two panel/round table discussions are organized with the themes:

  • Machine learning, artificial intelligence and Bayesian inference on the analysis of XRF spectra
  • Application-driven Fundamental Parameter values and need for further improvements

Contributions for oral and poster presentations are very welcome. The Abstract submission is open and is handled via the “EasyChair” platform. The extended abstract submission deadline is March 31th, 2019.
For further information please check the workshop’s website at www.exsa.hu/quant2019 or contact us (quant2019@exsa.hu).

We look forward to seeing you in Lisbon!

Please feel free to spread this information among the people who might be interested in. In particular, do not hesitate to put on display the flyer at your institute/laboratory/facility premises, thanks in advance!

Yours sincerely,

The Organization Committee of EXSA Quant 2019
