The EXSA Young Scientist Awards 2024 (YSAs) Ceremony is now an established event in the EXRS Conference series, and the new edition, held June 27th, 2024 in Athens, Greece, honoured this tradition.
Two awards are usually bestowed, one for the best Ph.D. work, and the other for an early career level (post-doc, young scientist).
The selection process consists of a two-step procedure. The first step is an objective evaluation of the application of the candidates (CV, list of publication) which is undertaken by the coordinators of the YSAs, this year Ioanna Mantouvalou and Mauro Guerra, for the Executive Committee. In a second step, the application (selected publications, description of the research performed) is assessed by a committee composed by five EXSA member, amongst whom former EXSA YSA awardees, and a representative from the industry.
Unfortunately, this year no candidate was found eligible to receive the YSA at the early career level. But the decision of the committee was unanimous, for attributing the YSA at the Ph.D. level.
The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that André Wählisch from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Berlin, Germany, was awarded the EXSA Young Scientist Award PhD level of 2024 for his work entitled “Development and validation of novel X-ray spectrometric methods”, which proves to make significant advance in X-ray Spectrometry method development and fundamental research.
In a dedicated EXSA session, EXSA president Diane Eichert presented André Wählisch the award, consisting of a certificate plus cash prize. André Wählisch was also given the opportunity to present his work in a dedicated time slot in the EXRS program.
The Executive Committee would like to thank the members of the YSA committee for their timely and thorough evaluation. We would also like to thank the EXSA members of the EXRS International Advisory Committee and Maria Kaparou, for the EXRS local organizers for their support in the organization of this ceremony.
EXSA would like to thank again all the candidates, who submitted their applications. Young scientists’ interest, application and contributions are indeed crucial to ensure the relevance of the YSAs in the X-ray Spectrometry community, as well as their successes.
We congratulate André Wählisch for this distinction, and we wish all candidates the very best in scientific careers in X-ray spectrometry.
