2 PhD positions available at PTB in Berlin, Germany

In the X-ray Metrology with Synchrotron Radiation departement of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt(PTB), Germany's national metrology institute, two Ph. D. positions are available.

The main focus of the first position is Operando characterization of battery materials using X-ray absorption and emission spectrometry within a DFG project.

New cathode materials for lithium-sulfur batteries are developed in a DFG project. For this purpose, the electrochemically active materials as well as side reactions during charging and discharging cycles are investigated in the PTB laboratory utilizing high-resolution X-ray spectrometry using X-ray absorption spectrometry. Using a high-resolution crystal spectrometer, these investigations will be extended to include emission spectrometry.

The focus of the second position is the Development and application of reference sample-free X-ray spectrometry for environmental analysis within an EMPIR project.

Within the scope of an EMPIR project for environmental analysis, X-ray spectrometry-based qualification concepts will be developed concerning element-specific composition and chemical binding states for samples from the field of aerosol and fine dust monitoring. In particular, a transfer of element-dependent quantification by X-ray fluorescence analysis from synchrotron radiation sources to laboratory instruments is planned to enable a broader application of the method and the validation of alternative calibration concepts.

The application deadline is September 13, 2020.
