The award is supported by the journal <a title=\"Journal homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/locate\/susc\" target=\"_blank\">Surface Science<\/a>, and consists of a certificate and a renumeration of EUR 3,000. Runner ups will receive EUR 500 each. The winner will be announced at the &#8220;<a title=\"Spring Meeting of the Condensed Matter Section (SKM)\" href=\"http:\/\/dresden14.dpg-tagungen.de\/index.html?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">DPG Condensed Matter Section Spring Meeting<\/a>&#8221; in Dresden, Germany, 30 March &#8211; April 4, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Young researchers are invited to apply &#8211; the procedure is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The applicant&#8217;s PhD certificate must not date back longer than 6 years from the first day of the conference (March 30, 2014).<\/li>\n<li>Young investigators who wish to compete for the &#8220;Gerhard Ertl Young Investigator Award&#8221; must submit an extended CV (including list of publications, talks, awards, professional experience) and an abstract for a talk (DPG abstract format) plus a two page description of the work to the vice-chairperson of the DPG Surface Science Division (a pdf attachment should be sent to Martin Wolf, wolf(at)fhi-berlin.mpg.de). The email must be received no later than December 1st, 2013. The abstract must also be submitted as a regular contribution to the DPG Spring Meeting of the Surface Science Division following the standard procedure.<\/li>\n<li>The candidate must also arrange for two confidential support letters to be sent directly to the vice-chairperson of the DPG Surface Science Division. These letters need to be received electronically no later than December 1st, 2013<\/li>\n<li>The prize committee will select up to five top candidates and these will be asked to give 30-minute (25 min. talk and 5 min. discussion) oral presentations in a special session at the DPG Spring Meeting of the Surface Science Division.<\/li>\n<li>The prize committee will select the winner and she\/he will receive a certificate plus the cash prize of EUR 3,000.
